|
Wool has been a vital product of the North Pennines' fells for countless generations. The whale-back ridges of the North Pennines form the backbone of England. From here, the headwaters swell to become the mighty rivers Tyne, Tees and Wear, dividing the counties of Northumberland, Durham and Cumbria. This is a land of high moorland and deep dales. It is home all-year-round for hardy sheep such as the Swaledale and North of England Mule, with their fleeces keeping them warm and safe through the ravages of winter storms. In addition the North Pennines region is home to the Teeswater and the Blue Faced Leicester (not as the name suggests, but originally from Northumberland), both renowned for their fine wool. Come clipping time, these fleeces provide a wonderful raw material for craftspeople and producers such as weavers, spinners, knitters and felters. They use their skills to craft fabrics and garments of the finest quality. North Pennines Wool is a project that brings together producers, processors and users of wool in and around the North Pennines to add value to local wool by raising awareness, developing skills and by creating high quality products. |
